Orkney Library & Archive is currently CLOSED but we are continuing to review the situation and are working on way to safely restart our services while following the latest government advice. The most recent updates will appear at the top.28 May 2020Starting on Monday 1st June our Book Return Boxes in Kirkwall AND Stromness will be open every Monday morning from 9am - 1pm to allow the return of library loans. All loans have been extended so nothing is considered overdue at the present time. This is to give customers an opportunity to safely return items they are finished with.19 May 2020In Kirkwall our Book Return Box continues to be open on Mondays from 9am - 1pm. The Book Return Box in Stromness remains closed for now. All loans continue to be extended so nothing is considered overdue. Only return items if you are happy to do so and can do so safely.We continue to be contactable via email or through our social media pages. We can also be contacted by phone but this can vary so if you are not getting a response please try one of the other methods. For Library enquiries contact us on email@example.com or contact the Archives on firstname.lastname@example.org.We are working on ways of gradually and safely restarting our services but much of this will depend on Government advice and guidelines. In the first instance we are hoping to resume our Home Library services and Book Box delivery service when it is considered safe to do so. We are also looking at ways to provide our other services while maintaining safe working practices and social distancing within the building. Further service updates will be published here and on our social media pages.4 May 2020Starting on the 4th May we will be opening our Book Return Box every Monday from 9am - 1pm. This is to allow customers to begin returning their library loans if they want to. We are continuing to extend all current loans so there is no need to return anything at this point - this is just to give customers the option of returning items when they are finished with them. Our FREE eBooks and eAudiobooks continue to be accessible via our website or by downloading the FREE BorrowBox App. Our other online services such as Freegal Music, SCRAN and the Oxford Online Resources can all be accessed from our website using your Library Card and PIN. Please get in touch if you need assistance with any of these resources.Our regular library Book Groups have been suspended due to our closure but we have now set up two temporary Virtual Book Groups to take their place. Both groups are reading books which are freely available to download using BorrowBox then discussing the book online using Skype.Saturday Book Club is reading Sofia Khan is Not Obliged by Ayisha Malik and discussing it on Saturday 23 May.Saturday Slaughters is reading The Girl in the Woods by Patricia MacDonald and discussing it on Saturday 6 June.For more information or if you are interested in joining the meeting please contact firstname.lastname@example.org March 2020We are doing our best to keep in touch with everyone and respond to phone calls, messages and emails but due to the present situation there may be periods when you can’t reach us on the phone or do not get an immediate response to your email. If there is no answer when you phone please leave a message and someone will get back to you as soon as they possibly can. We will reply to all emails as soon as possible but please bear in mind this might take longer than normal. Often one of the quickest ways to get in touch with us is by messaging over Facebook so we would encourage anyone trying to make contact with us to try that first.23 March 2020We would like to ask our customers to keep any existing loans at home for the foreseeable future. Please ignore any due dates stamped in your existing loans as we will be automatically extending all current loans. Our book drop return box is locked and we will not be sending any overdue notifications. Any item reservations that were active when we closed have now been cancelled and any uncollected items waiting for collection when we closed have now been returned to the shelves. Customers can still browse our online catalogue but will not be able to reserve items at the present time. 21 March 2020Orkney Library & Archive is now closed and ALL contact based services are suspended until further notice.19 March 2020From 5pm on Friday 20th March 2020 Orkney Library & Archive is CLOSED and all physically delivered services are suspended until further notice. These measures have been taken to protect our customers and staff, and have been put in place in an effort to prevent the spread of Covid-19 or Coronavirus among the local population.This means that there will be NO facility to borrow or return library books and we ask that customers keep all existing loans until further notice. Our book drop return box will remain locked. There will be NO Mobile Library services, NO Home Library deliveries and NO Book Box services to the islands. Our FREE BorrowBox eBooks and eAudiobooks can be accessed via our website or by downloading the FREE BorrowBox App. Our other online services such as Freegal Music, Orkney Talking Newspaper, SCRAN and the Oxford Online Resources can all be accessed from our website using your Library Card and PIN.Orkney Library & Archive staff will still be working to provide what services we can and to offer support for our online resources.
